One of the most important components of the survey was the one related to the question code V66, regarding the willingness of individuals to 'fight [sacrifice] for their country'. This question reflects a component of national belonging, where one's country is deemed most precious, with the citizen willing to 'sacrifice' and work towards the development of the country.
Despite the UAE not participating in this WVS wave, with the hope of participating in the coming ones, many values focused national surveys were conducted in the UAE in the same time frame. The same question was directed to the respondents, and the results of these surveys can be compared to other countries’ results from the WVS.
Results were analyzed at countries’ level based on a ten-point scale. The highest score is achieved by a “yes” answer of 90% and above. Next score is of 80% to 90%, and so on. Based on the table below, Qatar was ranked in the first category in willingness to sacrifice for home, and so did the UAE based on its national surveys in four preceding cycles. None of the participants from Arab countries was ranked in the second category. Jordan, Yemen, Kuwait, Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco were classified in the third category. In the fourth came Libya, Egypt and Iraq while the occupied state of Palestine was in the fifth. Finally, the sixth category included Bahrain and Lebanon.
At the level of non-Arab countries, Pakistan scored the highest points and it was in the second category. While Japan scored the lowest and was in the ninth category.
It was not a matter of chance that the UAE was in the highest category related to the willingness to sacrifice for the country.
It was a result of efforts made in the establishment of a state that citizens are proud of, which makes citizens in turn willing to sacrifice for the purpose of preserving their country. Martyrs, who offered their souls to their homeland, are a real example. In their anniversary, we say congratulations to the ones who “have been true to their covenant with Allah.”
